The Atlantic coast
Surfing
Taghazout is Morocco’s surf village: long waves, warm light and relaxed cafés. Lessons suit complete beginners; experienced surfers are taken to the spot that suits the day’s swell.
Taghazout
The experience
Why surf in Morocco
For more than half a century, surfers have followed the same road south. In the late 1960s, young travellers camped in vans on the beaches of Taghazout and found what is still Morocco’s most famous wave: Anchor Point, a long right-hand point break.
Today this coast draws surfers from all over the world. Taghazout regularly hosts World Surf League competitions, and the region produced Ramzi Boukhiam, born in Agadir: the first Moroccan on the World Championship Tour, and an Olympian in Tokyo and Paris.
Further north, Essaouira lives with the wind: white walls, blue boats, a UNESCO-listed old town, and a bay where beginners take their first waves while kites fly further out.
You don’t need to be a champion to feel it. With an ISA-certified coach, two guests per coach, your first wave is on the same coast. Between sessions: the beach, the old town, mint tea on a terrace.
The coast the world’s surfers travel to. Your first wave.

An example. We adapt it to the sea, the season and your group.
A session of about 2 hours with your coach.
A relaxed lunch at a seaside café.
Rest, a coastal walk, or the harbour at sunset.
How a lesson works
What a typical beginner lesson looks like, as surf schools on this coast run it. The coach adapts it to the sea and the group.
About 20 to 30 minutes before going in: a warm-up, safety and how to read the waves, then paddling and the pop-up practised on the board.
In waist-deep white water, the coach helps you catch the waves and gives you feedback after each one.
Most beginners stand up in their first or second session. From there you work on balance, turning and choosing a wave.
A short debrief with the coach on what to work on next time. A lesson usually lasts about 2 hours in all.

Good to know
Do I need to have surfed before?
No. Beginner lessons usually start from the basics on the sand, and most beginners stand up in their first or second session. Tell us your level and the coach adapts the session.
Is the equipment included?
Yes, on the session days of the surf journey. A soft surfboard suited to your level and a full wetsuit are usually provided.
Do I need to be able to swim?
Yes, you should be comfortable in the water. Beginner lessons usually take place in shallow, waist-deep water, with the coach close by.
Is the water cold?
The Atlantic here is cool: usually about 16 °C in late winter and about 20 °C in late summer. That is why a full wetsuit is worn all year.
What should I bring?
A swimsuit to wear under the wetsuit, a towel, sunscreen and water. The board and wetsuit are usually provided.
What if the conditions are not right?
The session is arranged according to the sea conditions, the weather and your level. On-site safety decisions are made by the instructor, and participation requirements are explained before booking. If it cannot run, we adjust the day.
