Surfing · The Atlantic coast
Taghazout
A fishing village that became Morocco’s surf capital: long right-hand points, warm light and surfers from all over the world.
The place
Morocco’s surf capital
In the late 1960s, young travellers on the road south camped on the beaches around Taghazout, and surfers found a line of right-hand point breaks along this coast. The best known, Anchor Point, just north of the village, was first surfed in the 1960s and is still Morocco’s most famous wave.
Today surfers come here from all over the world. Taghazout hosts World Surf League competitions that bring together Europe and Africa’s best surfers, and the region is home to Ramzi Boukhiam, born in Agadir: the first Moroccan on the World Championship Tour, and an Olympian in Tokyo and Paris.
The village has kept its size: blue and white houses on the hill, fishing boats on the sand, cafés facing the sunset. Beginners learn on the gentle beaches nearby, while experienced surfers follow the swell from point to point.
